Feed Seniors NOW Food Drive

At least one in nine seniors are at risk of going hungry. Beginning September 20, Comfort Keepers of Sioux Falls will have food-drive boxes at First Lutheran and other partner locations to help local seniors and raise awareness for this growing epidemic that affects millions of older Americans trying to remain healthy and independent. Start gathering your non-perishable food items now, and be ready to bring them to the church starting Thursday,  September 20! Medical Equipment Recycle & Reuse Drive

First Lutheran is partnering with the Medical Reuse and Recycle program to host a medical equipment drive on Sunday, August 19, 8 – 11:30 a.m. in the First Lutheran parking lot. This is a new program started by the Department of Social Services to reduce cost for the Medicaid program. The Medical Reuse and Recycle program takes used, durable equipment, restores/cleans it, and then redistributes it to individuals in need. Bring your used equipment to the church to help support this program. 

Durable equipment includes power wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, child wheelchairs, scooters, knee scooters, Rollator walkers, sit to stands, patient lifts, gait trainers, hospital beds, feeding pumps and speech generating devices

Join us for worship at 11 a.m. in the McKennan Park band shell with Larry Olson and friends providing worship music. School children may bring their backpacks for a special blessing. (Blessing of the backpacks will also take place at the 8 and 9:30 services at FLC.)

Invite your friends and neighbors, bring a lawn chair and join us for worship. In case of rain, worship will be held at First Lutheran.

The Evangelism and Outreach Board will provide lunch. Participants may bring a dessert to share.

On Tuesdays, July 10 and 24, First Lutheran volunteers will partner with Church on the Street in two events called “Laundry with Love.” At a local laundromat, 7–9 p.m., we will be offering free quarters, soap and supplies, food and fellowship to anyone who comes through the doors.

Grieving with Grace - New Study

Grieving with Grace is a support group where adults learn about the grieving process and how to care for themselves as they work through the grief of a loved one’s death. First Saturday of the month in the Gathering Room of First Lutheran Church.  Social time at 9:30 a.m., and group sessions are 10–11 a.m. For the next several months, we will journey through the book “Understanding Your Grief” written by grief expert Dr. Alan Wolfelt. Group members will receive a free copy of the book and their own grief journal.

All sessions are open to first-time participants and talking out loud is not required. For more information contact Pastor Katherine Olson, the group’s facilitator, at kolson@flcsf.org or 339-1983, ext. 214.

Lutheran Men in Mission’s next golf outing is Tuesday June 12. All Men and women are invited to Spring Creek Golf Course. Tee time is 8:15 a.m. The cost is $25 plus tax, which includes a cart. We will play a scramble format. Each player tees off with his own ball. The best shot of the group takes the next shot. Each drops a ball within a foot of the selected ball location and hits his/ her next shot. Each player will receive one mulligan to be used on any of his/her shots. We will use the middle (white) tee markers for the men and the forward (red) tee markers for the ladies. On #7 use senior tee.

Each golfer will be awarded a prize. Golfers will be recognized for the following categories:
   Hole #2     Longest drive in the fairway
   Hole #3     Closest to the pin on the second shot
   Hole #4     Longest drive in the fairway
   Hole #5     Closest to the pin on the second shot
   Hole #6     Closest to the pin on the tee shot
   Hole #8     Closest to the pin on the tee shot
   Hole #9     Longest putt

Immediately after the last foursome completes its round, about 11:15, we will gather at Spring Creek to award prizes while enjoying coffee and rolls.

Hear one of the nation’s finest college choirs perform. Conductor Rene Clausen, celebrating his 32nd year at Concordia, conducts the 72-voice a cappella choir in a varied concert. One section titled, ‘Out of Darkness Let Light Shine,’ includes special staging effects and works by Joshua Clausen, Eriks Esenvalds, and John Rutter. Other composers include Josef Rheinberger, Steven Sametz, Leonard Bernstein, J.S. Bach and René Clausen. The final set includes a number of hymns, folk songs and spirituals.
