Service Opportunities in the Community

Thank you for your willingness to serve! You're invited to explore the following ministry opportunities.
The Food to You Mobile Food Pantry is sponsored as a service in the Sioux Falls area by Charis Ministry Partners, a non-profit organization of 13 local congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Food to You provides a supplement to existing food assistance in the Sioux Falls area in order to decrease hunger and poverty through greater availability of food and household items. Food to You Mobile Food Pantry distributes food each Thursday at a different site. First Lutheran Church serves as one of the 13 congregations supporting this ministry financially and volunteers for two to three distributions per year.
Helps feed the homeless and poor in Sioux Falls. First Lutheran prepares and serves meals four times a year.
Works in partnership with God and people everywhere to build and renovate houses for those in need.
Delivers meals to the homebound in Sioux Falls. First Lutheran provides drivers for one of several routes.
Volunteers assist the visitation pastors at the communion services in the nursing homes. They also help the participants and serve them refreshments following worship. Join this team for visits to nine nursing homes. Do you play an instrument? Ask to be included in the offering of special music or accompanying the hymns.
This service provides free transportation for senior citizens and special needs adults involved in First Lutheran, First Congregational, St. John American Lutheran, Our Savior’s Lutheran, the Senior Companion Program and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.). Rides to Sunday worship and church-related activities must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. Volunteer drivers are needed. Contact: Kate Heligas 332-2777.
Is a free clinic that offers health screenings and foot care to those who are not able to afford these services. Volunteers can be nurses who will take blood pressure readings or someone who will welcome and greet people coming for screening and foot care. Help with cleaning of foot care instruments is also needed. First Lutheran volunteers help out approximately six times per year.
