(Recently, a friend's brother died. He died of a heart attack. He was 56. His death caused me to remember the following piece I wrote when another loved one died suddenly. The right word seems to hard to choose at a times of sudden and unexplained death. All a grieving person wants to do is understand and your best efforts to give comfort fall short. If you are grieving, I hope this will speak to you.)
Words, words, words… they all seem so hopeless and distressingly fall short of any ability to comfort.
Yet, I am reminded of the Word of Comfort, true Comfort, bought with His own life- blood, Jesus.
Jesus said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations (far and near), baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always (perpetually, uniformly, on every occasion, day after day), even (and right up to) unto the end of the world (of the age). Amen.” Matt 28:18-20 (KJV) (with help from the Amplified and Message versions).
It must feel like the end of the world right now. And the eternal WHY that our minds cannot possibly wrap around, it is bellowing to be heard, a word invasive and cruel. It is especially hard at times like this to listen beyond the WHY for the WITH YOU ALWAYS.
Please LORD, help us hear You, the Word of Comfort, “I am with you always…” Help everyone touched by tragedy be sensitive to Your moving and find the Word of Comfort in cruel moments when the world seems to end. Help everyone who suffers find Hope since no situation is truly hopeless unless it is Godless. Grant Your Present Peace, Amen.
1. Words heard?
2. Words felt?
3. Words shouted?
4. Words broken?
5. Words left?
