Preceding the Ten Commandments is Exodus 20:1, “And God spoke all these words: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.”
The expert of the law knew his people were brought out of slavery; it’s part of his world view. But I wonder if deliverance from Egypt was merely a fact the expert took for granted. I mean, he and his people would still be slaves if God had not brought freedom. What was in his heart? Were the commandments just a function of his position as a law expert?
Matthew 22:35-40
35. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
36. "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
37. Jesus replied: "`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'
38. This is the first and greatest commandment.
39. And the second is like it: `Love your neighbor as yourself.'
40. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
I think the expert of the law was surprised by Jesus’ answer. Jesus went right to the Spirit of the commandments, love.
Ask yourself, “Do I follow the commandments as my form of being a Christian? Or do I follow because God’s love released me from slavery to sin?”
1) What is my world view?
2) What is my motivation for following Jesus? Function or Gratitude?
3) Am I hoping that by obeying God I will build trust?
4) In what slavery have I been living, because I take for granted my freedom and God’s love?
5) What does my love look like?
