Alternative Gift Market is an annual event where shoppers can learn about and purchase gifts that are donations to international and local charities that help sustain people in crisis. First Lutheran has hosted the event and provides volunteers and assists in making displays.

Bread for the World

Bread for the World is a Christian citizens' movement  to end hunger globally. First Lutheran members take part in regular letter writing campaigns to members of congress and take part in other lobbying and events involving hunger.

Companion Synod Programs

Companion Synod Programs connect the church with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Faith and Hope in Nicaragua and the Evangelical Church in Cameroon (Africa). First Lutheran takes part in travel and learning opportunities between these churches in parts of the world. Financial support for programs and missions is also provided. Link:

ELCA World Hunger

ELCA World Hunger provides relief for hunger and local and global disasters and development programs through Lutheran World Relief and the Lutheran World Federation. First Lutheran financially supports these efforts.

Lead­ership & Development LIZWAN Inc. provides Christian leadership development and evangelism among Lutheran congregations in Colombia. Two additional programs are The Meal-a-Day for displaced children and a Revolving Loan Fund for home owner­ship. First Lutheran provides financial support and takes part in travel and learning opportunities with the mission.

Palestinian Lutheran Schools provide sponsorship of educational op­portunities for five schools of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land as they seek to promote understanding, reconciliation and peace amidst war-torn communities. First Lutheran provides financial support.

ELCA Missionary Support makes it pos­sible to share Christ with sister Lutheran churches around the world. In addition, First Lutheran Church supports Andrew and Barbara Hinderlie as our missionaries in Kenya, Madagascar and Ethiopia.

Sal y Luz

Sal y Luz (Salt and Light) is a project that partners six communities of faith in Iowa , Minnesota and South Dakota with Colombia 's courageous Peace Sanctuary Churches, places of refuge and hope in a country ravaged by five decades of violence. Volunteers from First Lutheran are involved in efforts focused on prayer, relationship-building, advocacy and education.
