4:12 Young Adult Ministry

4:12 Young Adults at Fernson Brewery. Join us on Friday, April 21, from 7 – 9 p.m., at Fernson Brewery (1400 S. Robur Dr.) for fellowship and a Pastor Katherine cheese spread! (Childcare will be available at the church.) 4:12 is Christian adults in their 20s and 30s experiencing ministries through a balance of fellowship, life sharing, spiritual growth and outreach - come join us!

Bach's B minor Mass

Bach's B minor Mass, wrap-up April 23. Please join us at First Lutheran for a wrap-up panel discussion and reception on Sunday, April 23, at 5 p.m., following the SDSO Bach B minor Mass performance at the Washington Pavilion. Discussion will be led by Maestro Delta David Gier, Dr. John Christopherson, Father Charles Cimpl, J. Mark Bertrand and Dr. James Johnson.

FLC & Augustana Choirs

Choir Concert – April 30. The combined choirs of First Lutheran Church and Augustana University, accompanied by chamber orchestra, will perform Johann Sebastian Bach's "Vespers for the Easter Season, Cantata No. 4." on Sunday, April 30 at 7 p.m. in the First Lutheran sanctuary. Free concert.

Advance Care Planning: Start the Conversation - April 18. Join us for a free class Tuesday, April 18, from 6 – 7 p.m., in the Friendship Room. Learn how to plan for your future medical care in the event you aren’t able to speak for yourself. Presented by University of South Dakota nursing students and Sanford Health. POSTPONED DUE TO ILLNESS – Rescheduled for June 7. “Maggie and David” vocal duet. Pastor David Houck and his wife Margaret, known by their stage name, “Maggie and David,” are performing a musical program at Bethany Meadows (3008 E. Aspen Blvd., Brandon) on Wednesday, June 7, from 3 – 4 p.m. This program will feature popular music of decades past, Christian hymns, Scripture, prayer, and spoken words of encouragement. Maggie and David are happy to provide this program in conjunction with the Caring Ministries of First Lutheran Church. All members and friends of FLC are invited!

Wednesday Night Forums: 6:30-7:30 p.m., Friendship Room
• April 19 – Social Media & Youth – Led by John Hegg. John Hegg brings a wealth of insight into the lives of youth, and will help you understand the good, the bad, and importance of social media today. 
• April 26 – Ayuda – Led by Jennifer Lunder & Cari Lee Skogberg Eastman. “Immigration: Myths and Realities.” Gain a better understand how members of faith communities are called to respond to immigration-related issues.

Sharing Word and Spirit, Five Love Languages - register by April 21. Members and friends are invited to explore how God communicates his love for us and how we can reflect that love in our daily lives, using Gary Chapman’s book “Five Love Languages.” The class will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on five Mondays, beginning April 24. There is no cost. To register stop at the Information Desk or call the church at 336-3734 by April 21. 

New Member Dinner – April 23. Interested in becoming a member of First Lutheran Church? Please contact the church office at
336-3734 and plan to join us for a fun get-acquainted dinner on Sunday, April 23, at 5 p.m., in the Gathering Room. New members will be received on Sunday, April 30 at the 9:30 a.m. worship service. 

Serve at the Banquet - April 25. On Tuesday, April 25, FLC will prepare and serve the evening meal at The Banquet. Many people are needed: 6 – 8 people to help prepare the meal at 2 p.m., and 38 – 40 to serve and cleanup at 5:15 p.m. Anyone age 13 and up may work in the kitchen; under 13 may work under the supervision of an adult in the dining room. Worship With Pueblo de Dios – Sunday, April 30. First Lutheran has been invited to worship with the Pueblo de Dios congregation. They worship at 12:30 p.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church (235 N. Prairie Avenue) in the historic district of Sioux Falls. Worship is bi-lingual (Spanish/English).  A meal will be provided after the worship service to allow a time for fellowship and interaction. Women of First Lutheran - Monthly meeting May 4. Please join us at our monthly meeting on Thursday, May 4, at noon in the Gathering Room for a salad luncheon and program - “Seeds of Love” with Jennifer Lunder of the Ayuda Initiative. Come for fellowship, learning, and to celebrate God’s love for all of us! 

Grief Support – Grieving with Grace Continues on May 6. Grieving with Grace is an open group of 20 – 30 people learning about the grieving process and being gentle with themselves as they work through the grief of a loved one’s death together. Social time begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Gathering Room, and the sessions are 10 – 11 a.m. Led by Pastor Katherine Olson, sessions include video clips, comfort from Scripture, prayer, encouragement, and access to resources for support. Please join us May 6 to discuss “Are We Changed Forever by Grief?” If you have questions about Grieving with Grace, reach out to Pastor Katherine at kolson@flcsf.org, or 339-1983, ext. 214.

Food To You Mobile Food Pantry - serve May 11. First Lutheran Church will be working the May 11 Food To You Mobile Food Pantry distribution at Messiah New Hope Lutheran Church (5100 E. Madison Street). We will need 6 – 8 volunteers at 4:15 p.m. to help unload a truck and an additional 16 volunteers at 5:15 p.m. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, or accompanied by a parent. All volunteers will be done by 8 p.m. Please contact Jeff Backer at (605) 339-1983 ext. 209, or jbacker@flcsf.org, to sign up. If you are not available to help serve, please help by donating peanut butter. Our goal is 150 jars of peanut butter to be distributed on May 11. Please consider donating.

Join us for NAMIWalks 2017 - May 20. On Saturday, May 20, walkers from First Lutheran Church will participate in a 5k walk to support the work of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) in South Dakota, raise awareness and show support for those affected by mental illness. Join our team or be a financial supporter of the cause. In May look for a booth in the atrium to recruit walkers and support or visit namiwalks.org/southdakota and search for “First Lutheran Walkers” among the top teams listed on the left of the page. Click “Join our Team” to become a walker, or click on our roster and support one of our team member’s efforts with a donation. Please pray for our efforts and help us end the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Worship with St. Dysmas congregation on May 25 – security paperwork due May 9. On Thursday, May 25, First Lutheran will worship with the St. Dysmas congregation at the SD Penitentiary. Meet at 6 p.m. at the front entrance, check through security and proceed to Hope Chapel. Afterward, we will meet at the Fryin’ Pan on east 10th with former members of the St. Dysmas congregation to talk about our experience. This is a hugely rewarding opportunity to worship “behind the walls.” Security paperwork must be completed by May 9 to attend.
