God, Atheism
and the Mystery of Evil

As a junior at Augustana College, Pastor John Christopherson took a course entitled, “Faith & Reason” taught by well-beloved professor in the Philosophy Department, Dr. LaMoyne Pederson. At the heart of this course was the spirited dictum of St. Augustine: “faith must always be in search of deeper understanding” (fides quaerens intellectum).
Now some 40 years later – after his own years of furthered study at Luther Seminary and the University of Chicago, university teaching and parish ministry – Pr. Christopherson will be joining Dr. Pederson in pressing philosophy, theology and pastoral care into the service of addressing a very “critical question” for the Christian faith, especially so for our entire Sioux Falls community with the recent death of a young construction worker, Ethan McMahon in the collapse of an old building in downtown: “How does one reconcile a God of love with the experience of suffering and tragedy in the world?”
